2018 Class of MPLI Publish Food Insecurity Findings

Members of the 2018 cohort of the Minority Political Leadership Institute (MPLI) have published new findings in the Journal of Public Management and Social Policy (JMPSP) that show that using a low access/low income definition of underserved communities, compared to a low access-only definition could significantly improve the effectiveness of policy designed to combat food insecurity in Virginia. “Assessing the Racial Equity Impact of Legislation to Establish a Virginia Grocery Investment Program and Fund,” is based on a racial-impact analysis initially conducted by the 2018 Class of MPLI and was published in the latest special symposium edition of the JPMSP. Its co-authors include Taryn Anthony (B.S.‘07/MC, M.S.‘10/MC), Tracey Dunn (B.S.’82/E), Stephen Miller-Pitts, Grant Rissler (Ph. D. '17/GPA) and Barbara Williams-Lewis.
“This article is an example of the kinds of interests that attract participants to MPLI and the continuation of those interests after the program,” said Nakeina Douglas-Glenn Ph.D., director of The Grace E. Harris Leadership Institute, the center that administers MPLI. “I am proud that [MPLI alumni] were able to draw on their strengths and the lessons learned from the MPLI experience.”
