HSEP Students, Alumni Involved in Symposium
The Wilder School’s Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness program played an active role at the recent 2017 Virginia Emergency Management Symposium.
Students volunteered while alumni gave presentations at the symposium, “Facing the Challenge: Doing the Work,” held March 21-24 at the Williamsburg Lodge and sponsored by the Virginia Emergency Management Association and the Virginia Department of Emergency Management.
Wilder School student volunteers were Kamile Menil-Bivens, Eriayle Walker, Ayanna McKnight, Nickolas Winkie, Rosemary Acheampong, Jeffery Harris, Nicolay Petrov, Myles Robinson, Timmesha Stringfield, Tristan Andrews and Ryan Bentley.
Two Wilder School graduates were among the presenters:
• Phil Miskovic, emergency preparedness planner, Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services, “Disaster Behavioral Health Resources in the Commonwealth.”
• Andrew Slater, Regional Hospital Coordination, Central Region, “Virginia Department of Health (VDH) Overview-Public Health and Healthcare.”
Wilder School students who received scholarships were Robinson, Safoorah Mughal, Ashley Jennings and Jared Hoernig. John (Jake) Marshall, who earned his bachelor’s in Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, was awarded his Virginia Professional Emergency Manager certifications and received the Gordon Barwell PEM Scholarship. Keith Dowler, a 2009 graduate of the master’s program, received the VEMA President's award for significant contributions to the association.
“The symposium is an excellent opportunity for our students to meet emergency management professionals and learn more about their careers,” said James Keck, assistant professor in the HSEP program. “We are proud of our students and alumni who bring distinction to the Wilder School through their academic, community and professional achievements.”
