Wilder School Selects inaugural cohort of Public Service Weekend
June 5, 2019
The L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs today announced the 24-member cohort of its inaugural Public Service Weekend. A partnership between the Public Policy & International Affairs Program and the Network of Schools of Public, Policy, Affairs and Administration (NASPAA), the program exposes students from underrepresented groups in public service leadership and education to the rewards of a career in the public sector.
In total, 24 students from 17 states and 21 universities will attend the intensive, three-day conference which will focus on the theme “Social Equity in Public Policy Analysis.” Highlights of the conference will include a keynote address by Virginia Governor L. Douglas Wilder, a tour of the Virginia capitol, and meetings with state and local policymakers. Students will also attend professional development workshops and introductory sessions on Geographic Information Systems (GIS) hosted by research faculty from the Wilder School’s Center for Public Policy.
The experience will culminate with participants presenting their own empirical analysis of regional disparities within the Richmond region in areas such as housing, economics, crime and transportation.
