At the Wilder School and across VCU, students are “Making it Real” by applying lessons learned in the classroom to real-world experiences and work opportunities. On April 5, seven undergraduate student workers from The Grace E. Harris Leadership Institute (GEHLI) came together to showcase the learning experiences they have had in their roles at GEHLI during the REAL program’s first ever Doing REAL poster session. These student workers included:

Priscilla Agyepong, Program Assistant

Jennifer Carranza, Program Assistant

Alex Dougherty, Creative Assistant

Essence Noel, Program Assistant

Angelique Potter, Program Assistant

Jhane Robinson, Research Assistant

Myia Samuels, Program Assistant

During the event, these GEHLI students discussed their role in upholding the mission of the Institute as they work to promote the development of current and emerging leaders in academic institutions, other public, private, and nonprofit organizations, and communities, and to identify and nurture the next generation of leaders through leadership training and public policy research.

They also shared information about how they have learned various skills through hands-on training, such as decision-making, teamwork skills, leadership skills, critical thinking, and event and program creation and organization. Other topics discussed during their poster presentation included GEHLI’s strengths, challenges they have faced in their roles, and opportunities they have identified to share their expertise in professionalism and office administration with students across both VCU campuses.

“Being a student worker at The Grace E. Harris Leadership Institute is more than just a job,” the students wrote on their poster, “It is a place to foster the growth of young aspiring professionals. Extending the knowledge and experience gained through the Institute provides an ever-growing platform for student workers to stand on.”
