Wilder School to Host Panel About Immigration

The Wilder School’s Center for Public Policy will host a panel discussion on Thursday, February 28, that offers first-hand perspectives of the work of some local organizations with immigrants.

“Immigration and Inclusive Communities: Local Responses to Migrants,” will further highlight the subject addressed by the VCU Common Book for 2018. The book, “Tell Me How It Ends: An Essay in Forty Questions” by Valeria Luiselli, Ph.D., explores the plight of undocumented children facing deportation from the United States.

The panel will take place from 11 a.m to 12:15 p.m. in the VCU Student Commons, Richmond Salons, second floor. It is free and open to the public.

“The book was selected by VCU as this academic year’s Common Book because it challenges readers to wrestle with the complexities of an immigration issue that has no simple solution,” said Brittany Keegan, Ph.D., research coordinator at the Center for Public Policy and one of the panelists.

Saltanat Liebert, Ph.D., associate professor in the Wilder School’s public administration program, will give an overview of immigration and integration. Keegan will discuss the role of community organizations in promoting integration.

Juan Santacoloma, multicultural liaison with Chesterfield County, and Tanya Gonzalez, executive director of the Sacred Heart Center, will share their experiences of working with immigrants.
