Gooden to Join Ryan and Qarni for School Equity Discussion
On Monday, March 4, Wilder School Interim Dean Susan Gooden will join prominent education leaders in Virginia to discuss the history of the educational divide between Richmond’s urban and suburban schools and explore how students, parents and ordinary citizens can leverage their influence to create positive change in their leaders, districts and communities by advancing the cause of school equity and inclusion.
The panel, "A Conversation About the Educational Divide in Modern America," is part of a series of events marking the 90-year history of Thomas Jefferson High School. Gooden will be joined by UVA President James Ryan. Virginia Secretary of Education Atif Qarni will moderate.
The panel will be held at 6:30 p.m. at Thomas Jefferson High School located at 4100 W. Grace Street. Admission is free but seating is limited. Advance registration is encouraged.
Ryan is the author of "Five Miles Away, A World Apart: One City, Two Schools, and the Story of Educational Opportunity in Modern America,” a book that examines the persistence of racial segregation by tracing the fortunes of two Richmond schools—Thomas Jefferson High School and Douglas Freeman High School. Gooden, who is a professor of public policy and administration and a renowned scholar, is the author of several books, including “Race and Social Equity: A Nervous Area of Government.” Her research examines areas of social equity, welfare policy and post-secondary education.
