URSP 666 Urban Commercial Revitalization

Urban commercial revitalization is one of the most challenging and important aspects of urban and regional planning. In many ways, a viable commercial district is the bedrock of a healthy neighborhood. Restoring the vitality of, and finding new uses for, urban commercial districts that have suffered the effects of suburbanization and other economic changes is a crucial part of neighborhood and community development. Each semester, the class develops a market analysis and revitalization plan for an inner-city neighborhood or downtown retail district. Working with local business and property owners, neighborhood residents and community leaders, and using quantitative market analysis tools, the class seeks to find new uses that can be supported by local or regional markets. The class then recommends physical improvements that will support the new economic uses.
